Cardinal Mario Zenari, Apostolic Nuncio to Syria, expressed cautious optimism while commenting on the recent change of power in Syria. Let’s recall, in December of last year, the Islamist rebel group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), linked with Turkey, launched an offensive against Bashar al-Assad’s regime. The rebels managed to take control over most of the country and all major cities previously under the control of the former regime in a very short time.
The sudden situation has led to great concern for Christians in Syria, who have a long history of persecution by Islamist extremist groups. On the other hand, Assad’s regime was secular, which provided Christians with security from being subjected to Sharia law or repression.
On the last day of last year, December 31, the rebel leader, Abu Mohammed al-Jolani, met in Damascus (the capital) with Christian leaders due to fears of persecution. He told them that Syria would be inclusive and wished them a Merry Christmas and a peaceful New Year.
Despite the encouraging words, many remain skeptical due to the group’s Jihadist roots and previous association with Al-Qaeda. In recent interview to Vatican News, the Apostolic Nuncio of the Holy See, Cardinal Mario Zenari, stated that despite the encouragement, one should be cautious:
“It remains to be seen if words will translate into actions.”
Many Christians, despite the encouragement, are considering emigration due to previous experiences of persecution and repression. Cardinal Zenari urged the local Christian population to stay in Syria and help in the country’s reconstruction.
“This is not the time to leave Syria, but rather the time for Christians outside the country to return. Christians have been given the opportunity, at least in words, to take part in rebuilding the new Syria, promoting values such as human rights, freedom, and respect for all. It is vital to be present and active in this reconstruction.”
The Nuncio concluded with an urgent appeal to the international community to support Syria’s reconstruction, beginning with the lifting of international sanctions.
